Camping
Planning a weekend hiking trip with friends? Here are some things to consider when you're planning your trip:
- Will you be able to bring food from home? How and where will that food be stored?
- How will you carry and store your medications?
- Will you have access to a phone at all times? How can you reach emergency help? Can you call 911, or is there another number you must call?
- If you phone for emergency help, how will people know where to locate you? Will you have a map of the area in which you'll be camping?
- Where is the nearest emergency facility? Does the ambulance carry epinephrine at all times, or must it be requested? Can the ambulance crew administer epinephrine?
- Do you have a written Food Allergy Action Plan that you will carry with you? Is the information current?
- Do your friends know about your food allergy? Do they know how to help you in the event that you have a reaction?
Don't forget to check the expiration date of your medicine before your trip. Finally, consider talking with your doctor, since he or she may want to prescribe additional medicine so that you will have a backup in case you need it.
