Feeling Safe with Your Date

By Sarah, age 15, allergic to eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, and other foods

Dating is a very tricky business when you have food allergies. It is scary to know that you could be kissing someone who just ate nuts. Even going out to restaurants with the person can be a challenge. However, there are ways to ensure that you feel safe, and that the person you’re dating fully understands your food allergies. This can be a little uncomfortable, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Hopefully, when you begin to date someone, you would already know a little bit about them – you might attend the same school or have something else in common, like a sport. If you already know the person, then he or she probably already knows about your food allergies. You can ask the person not to eat what you are allergic to before you go on a date. Try to explain the seriousness of your allergies and casually say something like, “Because if you did eat a nut, I wouldn’t be able to kiss you” in a playful way. If they are really having trouble understanding the concept, or just don’t care, then this person probably isn’t the right guy or girl for you anyway.

There are many ways and methods to propose the subject of your allergies to a boyfriend or girlfriend. Even though this may be hard and embarrassing, it is still crucial to do, so that you don’t get stuck in an unsafe, life-threatening situation. No boy or girl is ever worth putting above your own safety on any level!
