I Want to Order Food to be Delivered
Dear FAANTeen,
With food allergies, what is the best way to go about ordering food to be delivered?
Don’t fret! With a couple of easy steps, you can help minimize the potential for a reaction. Go to the restaurants in your area that deliver and start asking questions in person, just as you would when you are eating out in a restaurant. Bring your chef card and work with the manager to come up with safe items.
When you order, order only those items that you deemed to be safe and okay for you to eat. But be careful. Always double-check the item by asking the chef or manager about it on the phone, just to be sure.
If you are allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, as I am, certain cuisine, such as Chinese or Mexican, should be avoided because peanuts and tree nuts are often used. I never eat any food from a Chinese restaurant. The potential for cross contact is too great a risk for me to take.
Pizza places are somewhat difficult because of the fast-paced environment in this type of restaurant. Be aware that, if you are allergic to milk and you order a cheese-free pizza, there still might be traces of cheese on the pizza cutter and other utensils and cheese on employee hands. These types of restaurants may not be safe options for you.
You can still do all the things that other people do, such as getting food delivered, but you just have to be a little more careful and do a lot more legwork beforehand than most others do. As always, be prepared and stay safe.
