Oversea Advice
Dear FAANTeen,
I am traveling to Italy with my family, and am allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, and whitefish. I am sure that my family will take all the precautions with helping me stay safe, but do you have any recommendations for me as well? What have other people’s experiences been when traveling abroad?
Traveling can be a whole lot of fun, but you need to make sure that you plan your trips ahead of time. The most important thing you can do is to make sure that you remember your medication. This way, you are prepared just in case you have a reaction.
You’ll also want to make sure that you are going to have access to food that does not contain your allergen. You don’t want to be on your trip when you realize that it’s hard to track down safe food in another country. So what should you do? Check the situation out. Call embassies, and get in contact with food allergy organizations located in the country you are visiting. If you think it will be hard to find food you can eat, pack some to bring with you, or mail it in advance. Find out what you need to do in order to make your trip safe and fun.
I am about to go away with some of my relatives for a few days. As I prepared for this, I jotted down a basic plan for what I am going to eat while I am away. This helped me figure out what I need to bring with me and what I can get in the area. Since I have already organized my ideas for meals, I can relax on vacation and enjoy myself. My advice is to plan in advance, and make sure that you have fun when you go away!
